Fans demand a return to daytime Grand Final

2022-09-30T10:15+10:00

Rugby League fans have thrown their overwhelming support for an afternoon Grand Final over an evening Grand Final.

The Grand Final was traditionally played in an afternoon timeslot before it was changed between 2001 to 2007. From 2008-2012, it returned to a 3pm start time. Since 2013, the Grand Final has begun at 7:30pm.

The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio said that fans have voiced their displeasure at the late start times and have demanded a return to the traditional afternoon time slot.

“It’s a landslide as far as fan opinion is concerned,” Riccio said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“I would argue that they are the most important people that matter.

“The NRL Grand Final should revert back to daytime footy not only as a spectacle to fans but a better quality of game.

“80% of fans want it in the afternoon.

“At some point, the NRL needs to take this as a serious consideration.

“A 7:30pm kick-off this Sunday night is too late (as) we’re forgetting New Zealand which is a kye market for rugby league.”

Riccio also criticised the start time for State of Origin as he believes the matches end far too late in the evening.

SEN’s Greg Alexander said ARL Chairman Peter V’landys should listen to fans and make the switch to an afternoon Grand Final.

“Peter V’landys is an advocate for the fans and if the fans want it earlier, I think he should listen,” Alexander said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“Ideally it should be at three o’clock in the afternoon.

“That won’t happen so I would move it back and start it at 5pm.”

The NRL Grand Final is scheduled for a 7:30pm kick-off between the Penrith Panthers and the Parramatta Eels.
