Port Adelaide’s budget: Prioritise Pickett play over Graham addition

2022-10-01T11:00+10:00

Every club has a wishlist but every club also has a budget.

But not many out there know exactly what is on said list or exactly what each club has up their sleeve to spend.

Josh Jenkins has given each of the 18 clubs a round $1 million figure to spend THIS trade period on a player or players they require.

This is a hypothetical look at what a club needs, but ensuring the players in question are somewhat gettable and the deals are not fanciful.

It is what Jenkins thinks is needed and how the clubs in question should spend their $1m.

Next up from JJ is the Port Adelaide Power.

Port Adelaide’s budget – Prioritise Pickett play over Graham addition

Jenkins believes the Power should prioritise luring Kysaiah Pickett home over trading for Jack Graham.

“Where there’s smoke there’s usually some fire,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Mornings.

“His name came from nowhere in terms of being a trade prospect, Kysaiah Pickett, Kozzie.

“Port is clearly going to make a play for him at some stage, they’re saying they won’t this year but they will eventually.

“He’s from Adelaide, he’s got the family connection at the Power, he ended my recruiting and talent identification career early.

“I was involved in the under-18s squad with SA that he was in and I was like, ‘I dunno, I don’t really see it with Kozzie’. Sure enough, he’s a (Melbourne) premiership player within 24 months.

“It may never come out this trade period, the news may never filter out, but I think there’ll be a play at Kozzie Pickett by Port this trade period.

“They’ll ask the question, it might only get to a, ‘Would there be interest in it getting done this year?’, His people might say, ‘Look, no’. But it might go further.

“I’m thinking Port would give up a fair bit for him, but you’ve got to tread warily with him because he plays a role that’s very difficult and it’s an inconsistent role by nature.

“Only once in his career has he had 20 disposals in a game, 12 times this season he had 10 or less touches and 11 times this season he kicked one or zero goals.

“This is the same issue for Izak Rankine going to Adelaide, in that town, playing that role, knowing there’ll be multiple games where he has seven disposals and no goals, a lot of heat will come with that.

“But this trade period or next, Port Adelaide will make a big play at Kozzie Pickett.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m not in love with Jack Graham to Port, I don’t see the fit necessarily because of (Ollie) Wines, (Willem) Drew and (Travis) Boak.

“They’ve identified the need to add sizzle to their midfield, hence why Rozee and Butters have gone in there, now they’re going to backtrack and add in more of a grunt midfielder.

“Graham is an excellent player, but he’s a grunt midfielder, he’s not an elite kick, he doesn’t have silky skills … he’d be a great addition but I don’t think he’s necessarily what they need.”
