Silvagni predicts Giants' draft strategy as Demon requests trade

2022-10-02T12:30+11:00

Ex-Giants list manager Stephen Silvagni sees his former club targeting key position players in the AFL National Draft next month.

Silvagni spent three years working with GWS, including the club’s inaugural season in the national competition, before departing to join the Blues for the 2014 season.

Coming off a 16th placed finish and with new coach Adam Kingsley in place, the Giants are expected to be among the busier clubs this offseason.

Big name midfielders Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper have both requested trades to Richmond, while 20-year-old prospect Tanner Bruhn is understood to be keen to make the move to reigning premiers Geelong.

Despite the exodus of midfield talent, Silvagni doesn’t see the club spending it’s pick 3 on a like-for-like replacement, instead projecting the selection of a key position tall.

“I think the Giants will take key position players in this draft, unless there’s a standout mid, I think that’s the area that (they’ll target),” Silvagni told AFL Trade Radio's The Late Trade.

“I’m not too sure what the talent pool is but I think if they’ve got a number of first round selections (then) they’ll load up with some talls,” he said.

196cm Aaron Cadman out of the Greater Western Victoria Rebels and 195cm Matt Jefferson of the Oakleigh Chargers are seen as the two best key position talls in the draft class.

Elsewhere at the Giants, exciting small forward Bobby Hill has sought new pastures, with the club confirming that the 22-year-old will be a Collingwood Magpie in season 2023.

In better news for the club, Demon Toby Bedford has requested a trade to the NSW club, providing them with an immediate replacement for Hill.

Bedford was a member of the Casey Demons VFL premiership side this past season and will slot into a forward line alongside fellow small Toby Greene and Brent Daniels, the latter who suffered an injury-crulled season in 2022.

The 2022 National Draft runs over two days on November 24 and 25.
