Fresh details revealed on Grundy’s Melbourne trade as Demons midfielder reportedly meets with rival club

2022-10-03T19:13+11:00

AFL Media’s Cal Twomey has revealed fresh details on Melbourne’s trade for Brodie Grundy.

After being touted for months, Grundy is all but certain to become a Demon by next Wednesday, with Collingwood GM of football Graham Wright saying as much on AFL Trade Radio on Monday morning.

The Magpies are looking to shed Grundy’s hefty salary off its books but are understood to be happy to pay up to $300,000 of his deal per year. The 28-year-old is contracted until the end of 2027.

“I think Collingwood is pushing… for a top 25 pick for Brodie Grundy, so an early second rounder,” Twomey told Sportsday.

“Clearly there’s going to be some other factors involved in this move. There’s going to be how much Collingwood is willing to top up of his deal over the next five years given he’s got close to a million dollars for the next five years (per season) for the remaining part of his contract… clearly they’ve had those discussions.

“Graham Wright… was pretty open in (saying) that’s where he expects Brodie Grundy to be playing next year at Melbourne, Melbourne list manager Tim Lamb shared the same sentiment when he fronted the press earlier today as well.

“I think that one gets done. There’s a little bit of toing and froing I imagine on what the pick will be, at the moment Melbourne has pick 33. They’ll be trying to inch that up the board, they also have to see what comes through from the Luke Jackson deal, and that could be a factor in how this one eventually plays out.

“But I think for all intents and performances we’ve seen the last of Brodie Grundy at Collingwood.

As Melbourne prepares to take on Grundy, the club is at risk of losing midfielder James Harmes, with Seven’s Mitch Cleary reporting the 26-year-old is considering his options.

Harmes spent less time on the ball in 2022 compared to the year prior and despite having two years to run on his contract at the Demons, is reportedly pondering handing in a trade request.

“Melbourne midfielder James Harmes is a man in demand and has held a conversation with Essendon as he ponders whether to ask for a trade,” Clearly said on 7 News.

“The 26-year-old has two years remaining on his Demons deal so they would need to tick off a move, but his midfield minutes have dried up with Angus Brayshaw’s move into the engine room.”

Harmes played 21 games in 2022 to average 16.3 disposals and 3.3 inside 50s per appearance.
