Twomey’s preview for the first four picks of the National Draft

2022-10-13T12:25+11:00

The National Draft order is set after the 2022 trade period.

While clubs can still trade picks up until draft night and again during the draft, the majority of picks will remain as they are now when draftees' names are read out on November 24 and 25.

See the first 10 picks below:

1. GWS

2. North Melbourne

3. North Melbourne

4. Essendon

5. Gold Coast

6. Hawthorn

7. Geelong

8. West Coast

9. St Kilda

10. Carlton

With the top of the order largely set, AFL Media’s draft guru Cal Twomey made a number of predictions on which players clubs will take.

Will Ashcroft is widely seen as the best player in the draft but given he’s a father-son selection tied to Brisbane, his name wasn’t raised.

GWS (Pick 1)

Twomey told AFL Trade Radio: “We think Aaron Cadman is the likely number one pick now. They (GWS) have gone up (in the draft) for a reason, a key forward who doesn’t have the go-home tendencies that potentially some of the other prospects do have.”

Cadman is a 196cm key forward out of Greater Western Victoria Rebels, booting 34 goals in 12 NAB League games this season while averaging 17 disposals.

North Melbourne (Picks 2 and 3)

Twomey says: “North Melbourne with the two next picks. We heard (North Melbourne list manager) Brady Rawlings saying there have been offers for pick three, they’ll keep that door open but the likelihood is they keep those two picks going to the draft.

“I think Harry Sheezel is a very strong chance to be one of them and George Wardlaw as well would be a significant option as well. He’s a bit of a Jason Horne-Francis of this year’s crop once he gets going. “

Sheezel is a forward who can push into the midfield from the Sandringham Dragons and kicked 36.24 in the NAB League season.

Meanwhile, Wardlaw endured an injury-interrupted season for the Oakleigh Chargers but is an out-and-out midfielder who can also hit the scoreboard.

Essendon (Pick 4)

Twomey says: “The Bombers I’m fascinated in… I think Elijah Tsatas would be a good option for them, Bailey Humphrey is another one as well who would be in that top rung.”

Tsatas is a midfielder who has skills on both the inside and outside of the contest and possesses a game-breaking ability.

Meanwhile, Humphrey is a medium forward/midfielder who Twomey has previously likened to Sydney’s Isaac Heeney.

Jhye Clark (who has been heavily linked to Geelong), Reuben Ginbey, Cam Mackenzie and Matt Jefferson are the others seen as most likely to go in the top 10.
