Simon Hill questions validity of VAR as latest howler angers fans

2022-10-25T12:20+11:00

SEN’s Simon Hill has slammed the VAR and once again asked why the A-League uses the technology if it continues to get decisions wrong.

Adelaide United’s Hiroshi Ibusuki was controversially shown a red card in the 39th minute during the 2-2 draw with Sydney FC and VAR failed to overturn the decision.

Hill said that is was well overdue for the A-League to review what the VAR is used for and why the technology continues to get key decisions incorrect that could cost teams games.

“I’m not blaming Daniel Elder who was the referee because he gets one look at it,” Hill said on SEN 1170 Mornings.

“My big beef is that we have this blessed VAR system which I’ve always hated and is there to fix these errors.

“So, what’s the point in having it?

“At the time of (Ibusuki’s) sending off on Sunday, Adelaide were well on top and that could be two points that could cost them dearly at the end of the season.

“Personally, I’d like to get rid of it but it appears (the A-League) are so hell-bent on having this thing that we are stuck with it.

“It’s now just a matter of how we can improve it.”

Both coaches were quick to play down the decision but agreed that the technology was not being implemented correctly.

Hill said that football’s obsession with removing human error has only created more problems for the sport.

“The human error factor in sport, they are trying to eradicate it and you can’t do it,” he added.

“It’s impossible because you can throw as many machines as you like but at the end of the day, it will still be interpreted by a human being.

“They’re going to make mistakes.

“Is it worth disrupting the game so much? Our game feels like it’s being hugely disrupted.”

Sydney FC will play Macarthur FC in round four whereas Adelaide United will be looking to grab their first win of the season when they host Perth Glory.
