The star Saint who “could be the new Lenny” as Lyon’s favourite player

2022-10-25T13:15+11:00

Former St Kilda tagger Steven Baker is excited about Ross Lyon’s return to Moorabbin.

Baker played 69 of his 203 Saints games under Lyon from 2007 to 2011 and was a member of the 2009 and 2010 Grand Final sides.

While Lyon had a raft of star players play under him in his first stint at the club, his favourite was without doubt Lenny Hayes.

Lyon himself has admitted that the Norm Smith Medallist holds a special place in his heart, and with his return to the hot seat, Baker believes captain Jack Steele could quickly become the new coach’s pet.

“Steeley has to be up there, he always gives 100 per cent, he could be the new Lenny,” Baker said on SEN’s The Macca’s Run.

“I know me and Lenny got in a whack-on one night and I got sent home and Lenny didn’t even get a bloody slap on the wrist. He was the one with a split-open nose!

“But I think time will tell with that one, obviously he’ll have to spend some time with the new crew.

“They’ve got the players that will put their hands up … you can tell they’ll give 100 per cent like Steele.

“I’m sure he’ll have a favourite by the end of the year.”

While Lyon will have to pick a new favourite player, he’ll still spend plenty of time with Hayes who re-joined the club as an assistant in August.

Hayes will be one of Lyon’s assistants alongside former Cat Corey Enright and club great Robert Harvey.
