The delisted midfielder Gold Coast should target ahead of Dan Hannebery

2022-11-04T08:42+11:00

Should Gold Coast throw Dan Hannebery an AFL lifeline?

After a turbulent stint at St Kilda, the midfielder announced his retirement at the end of 2022, but after years of injuries he finished the year with tantalisingly good performances.

SEN Chief Reporter Sam Edmund revealed that the Suns have a level of interest in Hannebery last week, but David King isn’t quite convinced.

“The Suns are an interesting discussion. They almost need the off-field leader as much as the on-field. I don’t know where Dan Hannebery sits in that,” King told SEN Breakfast.

“He can kick the footy. He’s a beautiful kick of the footy so maybe he is worth the punt.

“I don’t know if he’s ‘still got it’. He can still do it – but I don’t know if he’s ‘got it’.”

Edmund believes the attributes that made Hannebery an elite midfielder at the Swans still remain in his arsenal.

“His training appetite is said to still be there and he would set a good example when it comes to the preparation, the diligence during the week, the recovery afterwards is said to be extraordinary and that hasn’t left him,” Edmund said.

“If he can get his body right – but the way he finished the season was promising.

“I still think he can play a role on a list at AFL level.”

King said he would take delisted North Melbourne midfielder Jed Anderson ahead of Hannebery if he was Gold Coast.

“I’d probably take Jed Anderson before Hannebery,” he said.

“Anderson will make their best 22 and be a definite starter for them and be available more often than Hannebery will be.”

Anderson played 99 career games for the Kangaroos including 14 in 2022 before being cut at the end of the season.
