“Let us in”: King calls for Paul Roos to speak on experiences in North Melbourne role

2022-11-04T11:15+11:00

David King has called into question why we haven’t heard from Paul Roos regarding the tumultuous situation that has unfolded at North Melbourne this year.

Roos was brought into the club at the end of 2020 to help find their next head coach, before settling into a mentorship role for David Noble across 2021 and 2022.

He performed the role mostly from the United States, with former club CEO Ben Amarfio admitting in May that it was becoming “difficult” to maintain the relationship due to the veteran coach’s commitments overseas.

“It’s been difficult this year because ‘Roosy’ is not here,” Amarfio told SEN.

“In an ideal world, Roosy would be in the business regularly and that’s hard because of his own situation in the United States.

“He’s going through an immigration process that requires him to be in the United States, so in an ideal world, we’d love him here, but he can’t be here.”

SEN Chief Reporter Sam Edmund believes North Melbourne made the call to re-sign Roos for the 2022 season, despite knowing he planned to remain in Hawaii.

Noble, along with numerous others at Arden Street, were sacked in 2022 and King believes club members deserve to at least hear from the Sydney premiership coach.

“We haven’t heard from Paul Roos. It sort of fascinates me a little that we haven’t,” King told SEN Breakfast.

“Do we need to hear from him? I think we do. If you’re going to hold that role at the club, I think the fans are entitled to know what happened.

“What couldn’t they get right? What couldn’t Paul Roos in his mentoring role with David Noble. It was a significant financial investment.

“Let us in. Tell the North Melbourne people who basically paid your wage what the challenges were and why you couldn’t get right what you thought you could.

“You come into a challenging environment, we understand that, but that’s why you get these opportunities.

“Not many (at North) have survived the last few months. I think fans are entitled to some answers.”

New North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson began his tenure at the club in November, despite ongoing probes into allegations of racism during his time at Hawthorn.
