The two things that will justify the Jackson to Fremantle trade

2022-11-09T14:15+11:00

Fremantle had an active 2022 trade period, securing wantaway Demons ruck-forward Luke Jackson on a massive deal.

Jackson, 21, was sent to Fremantle alongside pick 44 (from GWS) and 67, with the Demons receiving pick 13, Fremantle's future first-round pick and a future second-round pick (tied to the Dockers).

Taken with pick 3 in the 2019 draft, Jackson was crucial in Melbourne’s drought-breaking premiership win in 2021 – making him a tough get for the Dockers.

Given Jackson’s skillsets and ability to play in ruck and down forward, Fremantle had to give up a lot to prize the Western Australian product.

SEN WA’s own Mark Duffield will be keeping a close eye on Jackson in the next few years, saying he needs to be a top-six player and Fremantle need to be a top-six team by the time he turns 24 for the deal to be deemed successful.

“The big-ticket trade was the Luke Jackson trade to Fremantle and whether that becomes a boom or a bust for Fremantle,” Duffield told SEN’s Whateley.

“I have a simple measure on these things, I just say ‘Luke Jackson is 21 now and once he’s 24 we’re going to know what he’s going to be'.

“He needs to be in their top six (players) and they need to be in the top six, if those two things don’t happen well then it hasn’t been worth its while, but if those two things happen, you can justify the trade.”

Jaeger O’Meara and Josh Corbett also made their way to Fremantle in the Trade Period, whilst Lloyd Meek, Rory Lobb, Blake Acres, Griffin Logue and Darcy Tucker departed the club.
