“The last thing Port Adelaide need”: Power’s pursuit of former Don questioned

2022-11-11T11:23+11:00

Port Adelaide is one of several clubs interested in signing former Essendon defender Conor McKenna.

McKenna departed the Bombers at the end of the 2020 season, but after two years at home in Ireland, is keen on restarting his AFL career.

With the Power set to fight for his services alongside St Kilda, Brisbane and Essendon, SEN SA’s Michelangelo Rucci questioned why the club was so keen on acquiring the 26-year-old.

While McKenna proved he was a quality half-back with elite speed across his 79 games for the Bombers, Rucci feels he’s not a fit for the club from a role perspective.

“I would have thought it’s the last thing Port Adelaide needs, another running half-back,” Rucci said on SEN SA Breakfast.

“He’s hardly got the height to give the defence what it needs in a tall defender.

“He certainly has the connection with Orazio Fantasia from his time at Essendon but if you were to make a list of things Port Adelaide has covered, it’s running half-backs (at the top).

“It has gotten to the point with the ones that they do have, how do they convert them into other positions? Lachie Jones, where is he going to play this coming season?

“It’s intriguing that one.”

Adam Cooney, a former teammate of McKenna, agreed that half-back is not a positional need for the Power but he feels the Irishman is a versatile option that could help the club out in other areas of the ground.

“With a player like Connor McKenna, I think he could play wing or half-forward,” Cooney said.

“He’s one I think could be reasonably versatile.

“If a good player nominates to come to your club, surely you do everything you can to try and get them in.”

McKenna can join an AFL club through the rookie draft on November 30 or as a Supplementary Selection Period pick-up in the pre-season.
