“I’ll certainly put my hand up”: Zorko keen to captain Lions again in 2023

Brisbane star Dayne Zorko is hoping to captain the Lions for a sixth straight year in 2023.

After taking over in mid-2018, Zorko has led the Lions to four consecutive finals finishes with the side holding a 63-36 win-loss record in the 99 games he has skippered.

While the 33-year-old has helped lead a successful era for the club, questions over his captaincy were raised following an on-field incident with Melbourne’s Harrison Petty last season.

Former Lions defender Luke Hodge was one who felt queries around Zorko’s leadership would be raised following the incident, but Zorko himself says he’ll “certainly” put his hand up to lead again in 2023.

“I haven’t really thought too much about it,” Zorko said on SENQ’s Pat and Heals.

“One thing we’ve always really done since Fages has been there, I reckon we’ve said it a few times now, the players have always chosen who they want their captain to be.

“In the past, they’ve chosen me.

“If it’s a different way this year, then so be it.

“But yeah, I’ll certainly put my hand up.”

In previous years, the Lions have announced their captain and leadership group on the eve of the season in March.

Zorko enters the 2023 campaign as Brisbane’s oldest player and second most experienced behind only Daniel Rich.
