Premier VAFA club signs former AFL coach ahead of 2023 season

2022-11-15T16:27+11:00

Former Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna has found a new home in the VAFA after being announced as Caulfield Grammarians’ coach for the 2023 season.

The 267-game West Coast legend joins the club with a wealth of coaching experience having spent time as an assistant with the Eagles, Magpies and Bombers before joining the Suns as their head coach from their inaugural season in 2011 to 2014.

The 53-year-old has led Beaumaris in the competition’s Premier B grade for the last five seasons since departing the AFL bubble and will now take over the Fields who play in A grade.

Club President Will Bowes described McKenna as a “standout candidate” for the role.

“After a thorough and considered selection process, ‘Bluey’s’ vision for the football program, our players and our people made him the standout candidate for the role,” Bowes said via a club statement.

“We look forward to starting pre-season with our exciting young list with such a well-credentialed and respected coach leading our men’s program.

“This is clearly a significant announcement and a positive step forward for the club while we are under no illusions about the hard work ahead of us in A Grade in season 2023.”

McKenna begins his duties with the club on November 21 as the Fields will hope to improve on last season’s seventh-placed finish.
