“All-in”: Demons attempt shock push into top 10 of the draft

2022-11-23T08:20+11:00

Melbourne has attempted to aggressively trade up into the top 10 of this year’s draft, offering up two future first-round picks to Gold Coast, Essendon and North Melbourne.

AFL Media’s Callum Twomey reported on Tuesday that none of the teams have shown much interest in the deal just yet, but it does highlight what the Demons are attempting to do.

The Dees currently hold their own future first round pick and Fremantle’s, following the Luke Jackson trade.

Kane Cornes loves seeing Melbourne go “all-in” on a flag tilt in 2023.

“We’ve seen Melbourne do it in the past, they traded a future pick to get Kysaiah Pickett,” Cornes told SEN’s Sportsday.

“They’re all-in, Melbourne and we discussed St Kilda last night and my view that they perhaps don’t exactly know where they sit amongst the competition, but Melbourne for me – Clayton Oliver is in the window, Max Gawn is in the window, Christian Petracca, Jake Lever, Steven May, these players that have won the premiership with this group and they’ve signed them to long term deals, so they need to win a premiership in the next one to two years probably.

“If they can get a player in the top 10 of the draft like they have in the past with Luke Jackson and Pickett who can have an immediate impact and make them better, then why not go all-in?

“If you’re Simon Goodwin, there’s not many dual premiership coaches out there, they’d love to do it at the MCG and premierships have never been harder to win.

“There’s also going to be more teams added to the competition, everyone will be looking to improve, they’ll have a tough draw – I just like that they’re doing what Geelong have done, what Richmond have certainly done, trying to make their list immediately better for the now.”

Melbourne was also aggressive in the trade period, adding Brodie Grundy, Lachie Hunter, Josh Schache, pick 13 and Freo’s future first rounder.

Jackson, Sam Weideman, Jayden Hunt and Toby Bedford departed the club.
