Hawthorn taking “natural athlete” father-son prospect into draft “consideration”

2022-11-25T07:16+11:00

Hawthorn father-son prospect Jerome Lawrence could find himself on the Hawks’ list via next week’s National or Rookie Draft.

The Oakleigh Chargers product is the son of 1991 premiership player Stephen Lawrence and is considered a mobile tall prospect.

Having played as an over-age 19-year-old for the Chargers last season, Oakleigh coach Jason Davenport says that Lawrence only began to take his footy seriously this year.

“Jerome is a latecomer to football from a serious perspective,” Davenport told SEN Afternoons.

“He was a 19-year-old in our program this year and was just enjoying some junior football with his mates.

“He thought, ‘Do you know what, I’ll give this a go’.”

Lawrence kicked 15 goals for Oakleigh from 10 games and after improving across the season, Davenport says the Hawks are genuinely considering taking a punt on him as a father-son.

“He’s definitely a natural athlete,” Davenport said.

“He had some challenges with injury this year along with a couple of other players.

“But he’s shown enough I think that Hawthorn have really taken him into consideration.

“Fingers crossed either they give him an opportunity or if not another club jumps at him.”

Lawrence has been described as a project player that could be taken later in the National Draft or Rookie Draft.
