“He’s the captain for me”: The captaincy change GWS should make for 2023

2022-11-25T10:27+11:00

Kane Cornes has called for GWS to ditch its trio of captains and make Toby Greene the sole leader.

Stephen Coniglio served as the club’s skipper across 2020 and 2021, before they moved to a setup with Coniglio, Greene and Josh Kelly sharing the role.

Cornes believes new GWS coach Adam Kingsley should simplify things, saying the star forward is the natural leader.

“He’s the captain for me. This three captain stuff hasn’t worked at the Giants,” the Port Adelaide great told SEN Breakfast.

“I thought it was a bit of an easy decision to keep Stephen Coniglio in the job. The harder call would have been to relieve him of the captaincy duty, which I don’t think has worked.

“I’d love to see Coniglio just work on his football and he was better in 2022 after struggling and getting dropped.

“But Toby Greene is just the influential leader for me and I think he did make some adjustments to the behavioural stuff this year and hardly put a foot wrong in terms of his play.

“If he’s not the best player in the competition, he’s top three and I think it would be a smart move to instil him as the main man.”

GWS holds the number one pick in the 2022 National Draft, with coach Kingsley saying they have not yet decided who they will select.
