Three players in the frame as Giants “still working through” pick one call

2022-11-25T07:58+11:00

GWS coach Adam Kingsley says the Giants don’t yet know who they’ll take at pick one in next week’s National Draft.

The Giants traded up to get the first overall pick in last month’s trade period, with picks three, 12 and a future second-round pick exchanged for picks one, 53 and 57.

Given that they traded up to get the pick, many felt that was due to the Giants identifying the player they wanted while fearing they wouldn’t still be available at their original selection which was number three.

Despite being heavily linked to Greater Western Victoria Rebels forward Aaron Cadman with the prized pick, Kingsley says the club is still working through their options and have narrowed their choice to three players.

“No, we don’t know,” Kingsley revealed on SEN Breakfast.

“That’s not quite true, we’re still working through it, you know we’ve got a bit of time.

“There’s no point in making a decision right now, we’ll keep digging, we’ll keep searching, keep discussing.

“We have ideas and we’ve narrowed it down to three guys, I suspect.

“But the reality is, we’ve still got a couple of days beforehand, we’ve got a couple of meetings to go on and whoever we pick is going to go on to be a terrific player for the club.

“We’ll be excited wherever we land with that.”

When asked why the Giants would trade up unless they had a player in mind, Kingsley said that the club simply wanted to give themselves the option to choose whichever player they wanted.

He says the club was happy to send significant capital away in the exchange due to the bevy of early picks they had up their sleeve already.

“We had a couple in mind, probably three in mind,” Kingsley said.

“It was about, ‘Let’s eliminate the fact North Melbourne could take those guys, let’s make sure we know who we’re going to get’.

“Whoever we decide we want, we’ll get, that was the plan and we felt we were really stocked with first-round picks and pick 19.

“We have three (first-round picks) this year, two next year, so we could really afford to do that we felt.

“I’m pretty comfortable with where we sit in the draft and we’re going to bring in a lot of talent.”

Along with pick one, the Giants hold picks 15, 18, 19, 31 and 57 in this year’s draft.
