Report: Victoria Police widen investigation into Brownlow betting scandal

2022-12-06T08:05+11:00

Victoria Police are now looking into all Brownlow betting activity in relation to games Michael Pell was named emergency umpire for in 2021.

Pell was one of four men arrested in November in relation to suspicious betting activity on the 2022 Brownlow Medal.

It has been alleged that bets were laid on more than 10 matches the young umpire helmed.

Pell entered the AFL umpiring ranks in 2021 and served as an emergency, with Channel Nine’s Paddy Sweeney reporting that Victoria Police are now investigating games he was a part of.

“Nine News can reveal officers are now looking at betting patterns in the 2021 season – that’s a year earlier than previously reported,” Sweeney told Nine News in Perth.

“AFL umpire Michael Pell was one of four men arrested last month in relation to suspicious activity on this year’s Brownlow count.

“What we now understand is games where umpire Pell was appointed as an emergency umpire in 2021, his first year on the AFL list, are also the focus of this police investigation.

“At this point Michael Pell has not been charged and nor has anyone else as this investigation continues.”

Two games where he was an emergency umpire in 2022 have also been scrutinised.

This included Queen’s Birthday Monday, where Brody Mihocek surprisingly received three votes, despite Clayton Oliver winning the Neale Daniher Trophy and Mason Cox narrowly missing out.
