New Essendon coach Scott “conditioning” Bombers fans for patience

New Essendon coach Brad Scott has tempered expectations surrounding the Bombers in 2023.

While the club finished 15th in 2022, Bombers fans are hoping for a quick rebound under Scott after playing finals a season prior in 2021.

Despite perhaps underperforming last campaign, Scott told the media that he won’t getting “too involved” in finals projections as the team will “take time to develop”.

Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy and Kane Cornes discussed Scott’s approach on SEN’s Sportsday and agreed that his mantra is a smart one as he buys himself time to gradually build from the ground up.

Cornes: “Brad Scott spoke to the media this afternoon at Essendon … he said he’s been impressed by the capability on the list, but, ‘The reality is facts are, we are very young’, they’re going to take some time to develop.

“Every time he has spoken, and I don’t mind this, he’s been conditioning the Essendon fans for patience.”

Healy: “Under promise and overdeliver I think has been his mantra.

“It seems a pretty smart way to go about it for me.”

Cornes: “I reckon it is, it’s building from the young list, get the foundations right, set the standards and then (looking forward).

“They’re not even putting on the radar the possibility of finals next year I don’t think.”

Scott joins the Bombers will 10 years of coaching experience under his belt with North Melbourne from 2010 to 2019.

His first game in charge of the red and black will come in Round 1 when Essendon face rivals Hawthorn at the MCG.
