Corica under “more than a bit” of pressure to remain at Sydney FC

2023-01-10T12:38+11:00

SEN’s Simon Hill believes that Sydney FC manager Steve Corica is fighting for his job as Sydney FC succumbed to their sixth loss of the season after 11 matches.

The Sky Blues lost 1-0 to Wellington Phoenix on January 7 after having two penalties in the final two minutes of the match and squandering both opportunities. Sydney FC now sit in eighth position with just the four wins.

Hill is concerned that the most successful team in A-League history is stagnating under Corica and is in serious need of a fresh voice.

“He’s got to be under a bit (of pressure),” Hill said on SEN 1170 Mornings.

“A bit more than a bit to be honest.

“Last season was such a disappointment and they have never missed the finals two seasons in a row.

“They went out of the (Australia) Cup against the Oakleigh Cannons.

“He’s renovated the squad and I think most Sky Blues fans would’ve expected a far better start to the season.

“That pressure has got to be building.

“Defensively they’ve got some issues and without Joe Lolley, they looked a bit toothless up top.

“He’s got a few issues up top but whether he’ll be given the time to do that (remains to be seen).

“This is the game of football and it’s a result driven business.

“At the moment, those results just aren’t good enough.”

Meanwhile, Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan has left Copenhagen after a tumultuous stint at the Copenhagen club. The 30-year-old has signed a one season contract with Dutch side Alkmaar Zaanstree (AZ).

Hill congratulated Ryan for removing himself from an awful situation at Copenhagen but said that this latest transfer must stick.

“It’s a good move and Mathew needs to go,” he said.

“He’s got to make this move stick because it’s become a bit of a pattern over the past few years.

“He left Brighton, he went to Arsenal on loan, went to Spain and didn’t play there and went to Denmark and was dropped.

“He needs to find a home where he is settled and where he is playing regularly.

“He can’t just afford to sit on the bench every week or you can be labelled a serial number two (goalkeeper).

“I hope this move works out for him.”
