The Warrior who has impressed the most during pre-season training

2023-01-11T12:21+11:00

Experienced Warriors playmaker Shaun Johnson is in the best shape of his career as he gears up for his first season under new coach Andrew Webster.

Johnson, 32, has played more than 180 matches for the Warriors since roaring onto the NRL scene more than one decade ago in 2011.

However, after a brief stint with Cronulla between 2019-2021, the halfback has struggled to return to his previous game-breaking form, prompting many to question his position in the side upon his return in 2022.

The club’s season reflected Johnson’s battles, finishing the year in 15th.

With COVID restrictions, player movement and coaching issues now behind them, the Warriors are hoping to produce a far-improved season in 2023 with teammate and lock Jazz Tevaga saying Johnson has been a standout in the club’s pre-season endeavours.

“The one who’s really surprised me is Shaun Johnson,” Tevaga told SEN 1170 The Run Home.

“He’s always sort of played the veteran card when things get hard, he sort of sits on the side, but you know, Shauny this year … he’s really impressed me.”

Tevaga’s light-hearted quip reflects his admiration for Johnson, who has fought through injury and a slump in form to give his all in the upcoming season.

“He’s come in, he hasn’t pulled out of anything; he’s probably the fittest I’ve ever seen him in my career, to be honest,” Tevaga added.

“So yeah, he’s come back in really good nick and yeah, he’s one that has impressed me for sure.”

With Webster and a host of rookie and experienced players joining the Warriors this year, it is hoped that the playmaker can return to the Johnson of old and guide the Warriors to more success in 2023.

While it remains to be seen how the club will fare in the upcoming season, Johnson will first be on show on March 3 when the side hosts Newcastle at Sky Stadium, Wellington.
