Kane Cornes names his $81 Brownlow Medal smokey for 2023

2023-01-25T09:03+11:00

Kane Cornes believes Hugh McCluggage is a smokey for this year’s Brownlow, saying his $81 odds to win it are long.

The Brisbane star has played 130 career games, averaging 24.7 disposals per game in 2022 and kicking 19.18.

“I’m not a betting person at all, but about this time last year I was looking at the odds for the Brownlow and I noticed that Isaac Heeney was $151 and I thought ‘gee that’s good odds for Isaac Heeney and Sydney are going to win more games and maybe some more midfield minutes and that’s the best bet there is’,” Cornes told SEN’s Sportsday.

“I mentioned that on air and he started the season really well and was an All-Australian, but it didn’t quite equate to Brownlow votes.

“There’s one player I had a look at today who is $81 – his name is Hugh McCluggage and I think he is the best smoky for the Brownlow right now.

“Brisbane will win a lot of games, yes Lachie Neale will take some votes off him, but he’s into his seventh season, he’s 25, he’s in his absolute prime, he kicks goals, he had 14 Brownlow votes last year.

“$81 for Hugh McCluggage is good odds.”

McCluggage’s 14 Brownlow votes in 2022 were up from 10 in 2021.
