Paul Ayongo set to depart Central Coast for European opportunity

2023-02-02T15:30+11:00

Central Coast Mariners forward Paul Ayongo will leave Australia in the coming days, as club sources confirm to sen.com.au that the Ghanaian has agreed to join a side in the Romanian League (Liga I).

Ayongo was a wanted man across Europe, with several clubs from Portugal amongst other countries expressing interest in the Mariners’ forward when the January transfer window opened.

The 26-year-old said his goodbyes to his Mariners teammates and coaching staff yesterday at training as the club now prepares to move on without him for the remainder of the season.

The fee the Mariners received is yet to be confirmed but a likely sum of six figures would be expected to be the base of a transfer between the clubs.

Dylan Wenzel-Halls now looks set to replace the Ghanaian in the attacking third after signing for the Mariners on Wedensday.

The Mariners signed Ayongo at the end of last season from Liga Portugal 2 side Académico de Viseu, where he made 67 appearances over two seasons before signing for Central Coast.

Ayongo appeared in nine games for the Mariners this season, contributing with three assists and a goal in a short stint with the club.

The deal will likely be confirmed in the coming days as Ayongo completes his medical and officially signs with the club.
