Aaron Finch calls time on international cricketing career

2023-02-07T10:36+11:00

Cricket fans have seen the last of Aaron Finch in green and gold with willow in hand after the veteran opener called time on his illustrious international cricketing career.

Finch, a former captain of Australia’s white ball sides who had represented his country at all three levels, retired last year from ODI cricket.

The 36-year-old captained Australia at last year’s T20 World Cup and represented the Melbourne Renegades once again in BBL|12. But at a press conference on Tuesday morning, he called an end to his international career.

“I’m announcing my retirement from international cricket today fully,” Finch said.

“I think the time is right to let the T20 team move on into a new phase, particularly with a World Cup coming up in 2024, I think the time is right to allow them enough time and space to allow a new captain to take over and move the team in their direction.

“It’s been a pretty amazing journey, thank you to everyone.”

Finch played 249 white ball games for Australia between 2011 and 2022 and hit three half-centuries in the BBL tournament just gone. He captained Australia on 76 occasions in T20 cricket and departs the game a two-time World Cup winner.
