Corica declares Sydney FC are back to their best ahead of “massive” Sydney derby

Sydney FC coach Steve Corica has declared that his side has turned the corner and is back to playing its best football ahead of the Sydney Derby on Saturday.

After slumping towards the bottom end of the A-League ladder, the Sky Blues have roared back to life with impressive back-to-back wins against Melbourne Victory and the Central Coast Mariners to put themselves back into finals calculations.

Corica said that his side has shown great character in the past fortnight which has contributed to the results.

“They’ve shown good character coming back (from goals down) against Melbourne Victory and Central Coast,” Corica said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“I definitely believe that the corner has turned.

“If you look at the stats, we’ve been creating a lot of chances and we (haven’t) put them away when we’ve had the opportunity.

“We haven’t been 100% great at that.

“(The team) is thriving at the moment and we are really confident.

“We’ve got a big game this weekend in the derby so just looking forward to that as well.”

Sydney FC will travel to CommBank Stadium on February 11 for the second Sydney derby of the season against their bitter rivals in the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The Wanderers, who currently sit in second place, recorded a 1-0 win earlier in the season in one of the most fiery and memorable encounters in the derby’s history.

Corica said that this clash against the Wanderers is yet another massive challenge for his side.

“The first game was enough (drama),” he added.

“There was a lot of talk about the (Milos) Ninkovic situation and they got one over us at our home ground.

“It’s going to be a massive game and hopefully the supporters will come out on their side and our side and make it a big derby.

“We are really looking forward to the challenge.”

A win over the Wanderers could see Sydney FC jump up to fourth place on the ladder.
