Report: Delisted Magpie to train with Hawks in hopes of AFL lifeline

2023-02-08T18:43+11:00

Hawthorn has invited former Collingwood midfielder Callum Brown to train at the club this pre-season, reports AFL Media’s Josh Gabelich.

Brown will hope to continue his career with the Hawks after being delisted by the Magpies last off-season.

The 24-year-old can join the Hawks’ list via the Pre-Season Supplemental Selection period.

The deadline to add players via the SSP is February 15, with Brown having one week to prove himself at Waverley.

The midfielder already has links to the Hawks though, having signed on with the club’s VFL affiliate Box Hill whom he has trained with over the summer.

Responding to the report, Kane Cornes says he feels Brown has the capabilities to not just earn a spot on the list, but play AFL football in 2023.

"The Hawks are looking for some depth," Cornes said on SEN Sportsday.

"It wouldn't be a bad move, Callum Brown would probably walk into their best 22, so we'll wait and see."

Gabelich also added that Brown is expected to play in Hawthorn’s intra-club match next Wednesday.

Brown played 70 games for Collingwood from 2017 to 2022 but saw himself fall out of favour in Craig McRae’s first season in charge with just six appearances (two as substitute) in 2022.

His younger brother Tyler – who was also delisted by the Magpies – recently joined Adelaide via the SSP.
