Zorko steps down as Brisbane captain as Cornes names his ideal replacement

Brisbane star Dayne Zorko has stepped down as club captain following five years in the role.

Since taking over midway through 2018, Zorko led the Lions to finals finishes in each of his full seasons in charge.

After 105 games in charge, the five-time best and fairest winner says it’s been a privilege to hold the position.

“It’s been a privilege and a pleasure to lead a Club with such incredible history and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be at its helm the past five years,” Zorko said via a club statement.

“Over my years as captain, I’m proud to have helped the Club be more respected again amongst the AFL world and to have helped lead the charge in the successes we’ve had on the field. I step down at a time when the Club is in really good hands and entering a new chapter.

“It’s something I have really, really thought about (stepping down) and wanted to do. I’m obviously coming towards the end of my career so I feel the timing is right to let the new leader find their own feet in the role. I’ll be there to support them the whole way in whatever way I can.”

With the role now vacant and the club set to vote on their next skipper over the coming weeks, Kane Cornes wants to see superstar midfielder Lachie Neale take over.

“I’d love to see Lachie Neale grab this for the next two-to-three years,” Cornes told SEN Sportsday.

“He can go, ‘I’ve been a great player, I set a really good example on the field and this is my team now, I’m going to lead from the front, it’s going to be more about the team as well as my on-field brilliance.

“That’s the way I’d go, but obviously I’m not on the inside there.”

Zorko has previously stated that vice-captain Harris Andrews would likely be “next in line” when he steps away.
