Superstar jockey Purton to fly to Sydney for Group 1 riches

2023-02-20T17:06+11:00

Superstar jockey Zac Purton will return to Australia for at least one key race meeting in the Sydney autumn carnival.

The Australian turned five-time champion jockey of Hong Kong hasn’t ridden on home shores since 2018 when riding for Chris Waller in the Melbourne Cup.

In an interview with News Corp, Purton also refused to reveal out staying in Australia after the stint.

“I am coming back to ride Artorius in the Canterbury Stakes and some other very good horses," Purton stated.

“It works out well because I got suspended yesterday in Hong Kong and I start my suspension after I ride in Sydney, so maybe I can spend a bit of extra time there (in Australia).

“I am looking forward to riding back in Sydney again, it has been a while.

“Who knows, maybe I will enjoy it back there and stay there?”

Artorius, trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman out of Victoria, will run in the $600,000 Group 1 Canterbury Stakes at Randwick on March 4.

News Corp also reports that Purton will ride one-time Blue Diamond favourite King's Gambit in the Group 2 Todman Stakes and is likely to mount Communist in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas.

Purton, 40, is regarded as one of the best jockeys on the globe given his success in the lucrative Asian market and all over the world.
