Why GWS will be a completely different team in 2023 under Adam Kingsley

2023-03-15T12:30+11:00

GWS Giants coach Adam Kingsley has promised that his side will look like a completely different team than last season ahead of their season opener against the Adelaide Crows.

The Giants finished 16th last season with a 6-16 record in a tumultuous year.

Long-time coach Leon Cameron stood down from his position mid-season and interim coach Mark McVeigh questioned the effort of his players after a 73-point loss to Sydney.

Kingsley, who will undertake his first year as a head coach, said he is looking forward to beginning his tenure at the Giants with a clean slate.

“I’m going to introduce the way that I think the game should be played,” Kingsley said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“Our game style will change pretty significantly from last year to this year.

“That doesn’t mean that either is right or wrong but it just means that it’s going to change and it’s what I believe in.

“I will give every one of our guys a great opportunity to prove themselves with me and in our system.

“Until they show that they can or they can’t, that’s when I’ll make judgments as a coach on what I can do further.”

The Giants lost several key players during the off-season with Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper joining Richmond as well as Bobby Hill and Tanner Bruhn relocating to Collingwood and Geelong respectively.

Kingsley said his most important player for 2023 is skipper Toby Greene and he said he is excited for the two-time All Australian to lead from the front this season.

“He’s a captain that probably doesn’t lead through words and great speeches,” Kingsley noted.

“It’s more through his actions. His training actions are really strong but more importantly, his playing actions are really strong too.

“He plays the right way and the way a captain should play.

“He’s combative on the field, plays in an important position ahead of the ball.

“He’s been a champion of the competition for a long time but with this added responsibility, I’m really keen to see him go about it.”

The Giants host the Crows at GIANTS Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
