Melbourne reveals Gawn's knee injury diagnosis

2023-03-25T17:01+11:00

Max Gawn has avoided an ACL injury in news that will undoubtedly provide Demons fans with a massive sense of relief.

The Melbourne captain went down in the first quarter of Friday night’s loss to Brisbane and was quickly subbed out after teammate Jack Viney fell across his knee.

Gawn was despondent in the rooms and club doctors couldn’t rule out an ACL injury.

But scans have indicated a medial ligament injury, with the premiership ruckman likely to miss between four and six weeks.

“Max had scans which show a moderate-grade medial ligament injury and at this stage, we expect him to be available in four to six weeks,” Melbourne footy boss Alan Richardson told Melbourne Media.

“Max has seen a knee specialist and is working with our medical and high-performance team to determine the best return to play rehabilitation program.”

Melbourne has games against Sydney, West Coast, Essendon and Richmond in the next month, all games Gawn is set to miss.

New recruit Brodie Grundy shouldered the ruck mantle solo in Gawn’s absence against the Lions, recording 12 disposals and 45 hitouts in the 11-point loss.
