Five Round 2 performances that flew under the radar according to Champion Data

2023-03-29T09:52+11:00

Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne joined SEN’s Sportsday to discuss the five performances from Round 2 which may have been over looked in the Coaches votes.

Hoyne used Champion Data’s rating system, which values impact above volume and punishes mistakes, to find under the radar performances from players.

See his five performances from players over the weekend below:

Matthew Kennedy (Carlton)

“I think Matthew Kennedy might have got missed in this game. He was the third highest rated player on the ground behind Jeremey Cameron and Adam Saad on the weekend,” Hoyne told SEN’s Sportsday.

“He had 26 disposals, 11 contested possessions and seven score involvements. One of the high impact games that we keep talking about.”

Josh Dunkley (Brisbane)

“Josh Dunkley got two votes in the Coaches Award on the weekend. But having a look at the impact that he had on the match he probably should have got either eight or the 10 In terms of what he did.”

“That was actually his eighth highest rated game across his whole career on the weekend. 26 disposals, 15 contested, nine clearances and the other aspect that I love 81 pressure points. So to put that into perspective that will be a top 10-20 pressure game across the whole season by any player this year.

“We talk about the Dogs and what they’ve lost, they’ve lost everything that Josh Dunkley did on Friday night.”

Steele Sidebottom (Collingwood)

“One that I thought was exceptional was Steele Sidebottom. We talk about what Collingwood are doing at the moment from a ball movement perspective and they’re so good to watch and they’re trying to bite off a lot of these challenging kicks.”

“He’s sitting in seat 1A in terms of what he’s doing from a ball use perspective. His ball use across the first two weeks is going 33 percent above AFL average. For the type of kicks he’s trying to pull off it is remarkable what he’s doing. And as a result that was his highest rated game since 2017.

“So Kane, we keep talking about impact, that’s all that we are trying to measure. 24 (disposals) he had. He’s had games where he’s had 30, 35, 40 plus (disposals) but the impact hasn’t been there. This is what Collingwood are doing, it doesn’t need to be a 35-disposal game to have an impact. It’s just high impact with what he is doing.

“22 he rated for that game. So that is a game that's off the charts.

“Anything 15 and above should be considered an elite game.”

James Aish (Fremantle)

“I thought what James Aish did from a Fremantle perspective was actually quite impressive. They’ve lost Blake Acres to Carlton so they have to find that wing replacement this year and so far across the first two weeks he’s moved into that role.

“29 disposals on the weekend, but he was the number one rated player for Fremantle. Only LDU and Jy Simpkin were rated above him on the ground as a whole on Saturday night.

“And we keep talking about Fremantle and their struggles to be daring with ball in hand, well he was able to claim 600m metres on the weekend which is one of his better games across his career. He rated about a 17.”

Dylan Shiel (Essendon)

“The theme here is high impact, high impact, high impact and we’ll finish off with Dylan Shiel. So Dylan Shiel’s probably had his knockers over the journey. Probably the last four or five years.

“But his game on the weekend, Darcy Parish gets a lot of love and fair enough too he had a high impact game, but Dylan Shiel 27 disposals, 11 contested, two goals. And again to have a ratings game of over 20 on the weekend against Gold Coast just shows the impact that he’s having.

“And probably what I was impressed with you know 27 disposals, over half of them were won in the forward half of the ground. So it’s not cheap ball anymore for Dylan Shiel and I think he’s one to watch if you’re an Essendon supporter moving forward and the impact that he’s having.”
