The type of players that need more love and recognition externally

2023-03-28T18:00+11:00

Every club has them.

The players that are loved and celebrated by their coaches and teammates, but hardly anyone would recognise them if they walked past them in the supermarket.

This week and to be fair, most weeks, we get fixated on the stars of the game, the players that are in line for All-Australian selection, the Coleman Medal fancies or which players will feature as one of the favourites on Brownlow night.

This week its been all about Nick Daicos, Charlie Curnow, Jeremy Cameron, Luke Davies-Uniacke and four-time best and fairest winner and former Brisbane captain Dayne Zorko.

But what about those players that are just as important to team structure and success but won't feature in double-page spreads in the papers?

The wingers that run up and down one side of the ground all day, holding their width and getting back to support the defenders when they need help.

Or the high half-forwards who pressure and chase all day, who cover just as much ground as the midfielders but sometimes walk away with under 10 possessions to show it.

Last night I mentioned a couple.

John Noble, a player plucked in the 2019 mid-season draft by the Pies.

Second-year forward Jesse Motlop is quickly developing into one of these assets for the Blues.

Sydney’s Will Hayward has been doing it for years. He was named the Swans’ best team man last year, and it staggers me that he isn't the talked about more.

He’s the complete player.

I rang Sydney today and asked the forwards coach Jarrad McVeigh what makes him great.

"He plays a certain role in the forward line," McVeigh said.

"His work rate up and down the field, his pressure on the opposition ball carriers is first class.

"Also he's got the ability now, the last few years he's kicked around 30 goals a year.

"He might be underrated around the traps, but certainly within our walls, he's highly rated.

"He won our Best Clubman last year, he's our most selfless player and probably our most trusted player.

"So his last two years have been (great) and he's started this year really well."

Geelong built its 2022 premiership team around players such as Noble and Hayward.

Tom Atkins, Gryan Myers, Brad Close, Zach Guthrie, Jed Bews, Jake Kolodjashnij and Jack Henry.

There are a number of players that need more love and recognition externally.
