How a trial in defence made in-form Lion a better forward

2023-04-14T08:55+10:00

Brisbane’s Cam Rayner thinks his floated move to the backline is now over.

The former No. 1 pick was billed for a role off half back this season but now through five rounds, he’s quickly found a place in a more natural position up forward.

Following his starring four-goal, 17-disposal performance in the Round 4 win over Collingwood, Rayner believes that learning to play in defence has made him a better player up forward.

“I feel like when I was playing in the backline, playing on players that gave me challenges, I thought that was something I could bring into my game,” Rayner told SENQ Breakfast.

“When other players were a bit stagnant on me, I was like, ‘That’s how easy I am to defend at times’.

“Having that there and having it in the back of my mind, I think it’s going to make me a better forward.

“Being able to play in all different positions on the ground, is always very helpful.

“It’s been a nice little experiment, but I think it’s over now.”

With their big Easter Thursday win behind them, Brisbane have now flown to Adelaide we’re they’ll face North Melbourne at Mount Barker.

Rayner says the Lions will enjoy what the city has to offer before taking on the Kangaroos at the venue’s first AFL game.

“We got to Adelaide yesterday,” Rayner said.

“All the boys will go out and do our captain’s run at Mount Barker today

“We’re all kind of doing a few different things, I’m going to the zoo today which will be interesting.

“I think we might try and get a photo with a Lion or something like that.

“It’s going to be a good week, the Crows played awesome last night and hopefully the good footy can continue all the way through.”

The bounce for the Brisbane v North Melbourne game at Adelaide Hills is set for 1:10 pm (AEST) on Saturday.
