“It’s a big decision”: Free agent Giant not rushing into contract call

2023-04-14T14:49+10:00

GWS tall Harry Himmelberg has a big decision on his future coming up.

As a restricted free agent, the Giant will test the open market if he remains unsigned until the end of the season.

In his eighth season with the club, Himmelberg says he’s happy in Western Sydney but won’t focus on his contract as he lets manager David Trotter manage his off-field affairs.

“I think it’s something I don’t really want to be focusing on this early in the season,” Himmelberg said SEN Mornings.

“It’s a big decision and I’m happy where I am at the moment.

“I’m more focused on learning a new system and performing in that system to my best ability and helping the team win, to be honest.

“My manager David Trotter has been awesome, to be honest, and he keeps me in the loop.

“But it’s progressing well, I think we’ll let the season play out.

“There’s not too much to think about to honest, we’re pretty happy and what will be will be.”

With the Giant admitting he’s likely to see how the season plays out before making a call, he says he’s happy to make a call whenever it comes, whether it’s soon or at the eleventh hour.

“I don’t really like to put timelines on things,” Himmelberg said.

“If it happens, it happens, but if we have to wait a bit longer, then we’ll have to wait a little bit longer.

“My manager David Trotter has been really good, and he’s been guiding me through it.

“My job is to play footy, and his job is to worry about that sort of stuff for me.”

Himmelberg is considered a swingman that can play forward or back, making him an enticing option for clubs looking for a versatile tall.

So far under coach Adam Kingsley, the 26-year-old has been deployed up forward and he’s kicked five goals from four games this season.

GWS and Himmelberg next face Hawthorn at Norwood Oval on Sunday during Gather Round.
