The incredible stat that highlights Richmond's ill-discipline issues

2023-04-19T09:10+10:00

At the start of the year many football experts and fans had Richmond re-emerging as a flag contender in 2023, but after one win from five matches Damien Hardwick’s side are beginning to look for answers.

The Tigers were criticised for their ill-disciplined display against the Swans on Friday night after they gave away several 50-metre penalties, but according to Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne this lack of discipline has been an ongoing trend for the Tigers.

“There’s a lot of talk about the undisciplined Tigers,” Hoyne told SEN’s Sportsday.

“So far this year they’ve given away nine 50-metre penalties which is the most of any team in the competition. But since 2018, they have committed 55 more 50-metre penalties than any other team in the competition.

“They gave away the most (50-metre penalties) in 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023.

“It is a theme that has been with Richmond now for the best part of six years.”

Richmond will be hoping to turn their year around and secure their second win of the season when they take on Melbourne for the Anzac Day eve clash at the MCG on Monday night.
