Giants trending upwards despite slow start to the season says Kingsley

2023-04-19T11:58+10:00

GWS Giants coach Adam Kingsley has admitted his side still has plenty to improve on if they are to compete against the biggest teams in the competition but is happy with the start to the season.

The Giants edged out Hawthorn in a thriller during Gather Round after Harry Himmelberg put his side in front and then sealed the win with an incredible defensive effort.

Kingsley said the Giants had strong moments in games but aren't producing them at a consistent level.

“We’ve been okay and have had some really strong patches,” Kingsley said on SEN 1170 Mornings.

"We are certainly building towards where we need to get to and I’ve seen improvements from the weekend’s game around the contest and in tackling.

“It’s the foundation of our game and we are heading into the right direction.

“It’s a big challenge for us (against) Brisbane this week and I’ve been really pleased with our backs who have been stepping up.”

The Giants will be without star midfielder Tom Green who accepted a one-mathc suspension for a dangerous tackle on Hawthorn’s Josh Ward.

Kingsley said he will bring in Harry Perryman over recruit Toby Beford who is yet to make his debut for the club since joining from Melbourne during last year’s trade period.

“(Belford) will be playing VFL this week,” Kingsley confirmed.

“He’s missed eight or nine weeks with a hamstring tendon and he’s been training for the last week.

“He just needs a hitout first before he comes into the AFL team.”

The Giants host the Brisbane Lions at Manuka Oval on Saturday afternoon.
