“His future would be in question”: What’s next for overlooked Georgiades?

What’s next for Mitch Georgiades?

That’s the question on the lips of Port Adelaide fans and footy fans as a whole keen to see the 21-year-old rediscover his best footy.

Georgiades booted 32 goals in 2021 – his second year at the top level – and shaped as a star of the future. But two years on, Georgiades hasn’t played since Round 2 after being dropped and now has dropped behind debutant Ollie Lord in the pecking order.

Club great Kane Cornes suggested Georgiades’ future is now up in the air

“They’re just disappointed with his contest work,” he told SEN’s Sportsday.

“Their SANFL team gets smashed every week because they don't have the depth.

“So it's not a great comp for him to play and he's a player who plays better up a level, but his future would be in question.”

Lord has been selected after Charlie Dixon was ruled out with a knee injury.

Georgiades was drafted out of Subiaco and West Coast has reportedly previously asked the question of the key forward.

“I assume he's looking at his options,” Cornes continued.

“He's a West Australian, but a lot of Victorian clubs are into him as well.

“I said weeks and weeks ago that they should play him at half back and I know they've discussed it.

“He isn’t much shorter than Jeremy Howe … he’s an interceptor.

“He would, he would be a similar size to (Callum) Wilkie … he's that hybrid 191cm player.”

Georgiades returned two goals in his opening two games this year from seven shots at goal, but hasn’t torn the SANFL apart since being dropped.

He’s booted four majors in his two games for the reserves, but as Cornes notes, Port has lost both convincingly.

Not questioning his talent, Cornes believes it’s a confidence issue for Georgiades.

“It's his fourth year in the system,” Cornes said.

“In his second year, he kicked 32 (goals) finished second in the rising star and you thought, ‘Who is this guy sitting on heads and winning mark of the year?’.

“Last year had a lot of shots at goal, 47 shots at goal, but was inaccurate and this year hasn't been able to establish himself.

“He’s lost all of his confidence.”
