“Those days are gone”: Wayne Carey done with mainstream media roles

2023-05-05T09:12+10:00

AFL great Wayne Carey says his time as part of the mainstream media is done.

Carey was previously a commentator with Channel Seven, on radio with Triple M and a columnist with The Age.

The 51-year-old’s high-profile career in the media seemingly came to an end after he parted those three organisations after he was ejected from Perth’s Crown casino last August when a small bag containing a powdered substance fell out of his pocket.

Now the host of his podcast The Truth Hurts with Wayne Carey, the former Roo and Crow was asked by SEN’s Kane Cornes whether he’d return to the mainstream football media.

“No, no, no, those days are gone,” Carey replied on SEN Breakfast.

“I was just about done anyway, Kane, you're a new kid on the block.

“I was planning not to probably do TV next year.”

While Carey is happy to step away from traditional football media, he did admit that he misses his time at Triple M in particular.

“The radio banter is something that I miss,” Carey admitted.

“Obviously Triple M is probably different to any other station and that is, you know, it is a real jocular, fun (environment).

“A lot of it isn't footy, which I really enjoyed, but I'm getting that (banter) with my mates outside of footy.

“So, I can guarantee you there's still plenty of banter … that's probably my second language.

“That is have fun and have that sort of banter with your mates while watching footy or anything else for that matter.”

Carey left Triple M after his contract expired at the end of 2022 with the station stating he wouldn’t be a part of their coverage in 2023.
