Newman cited for high strike on Neale

2023-05-06T18:01+10:00

UPDATE

Nic Newman has been offered a one-match suspension by the Match Review Officer for a strike on Lachie Neale.

The incident, which occurred in the third quarter of Friday night's 24-point win for the Blues, was graded intentional, low impact and high contact.

He's set to miss next week's clash with the Western Bulldogs unless the Blues can make a successful case at the AFL tribunal.

EARLIER

Carlton defender Nic Newman could find himself in some hot water with the Match Review Officer after his stray elbow on Brisbane star Lachie Neale in Friday night’s clash at Marvel Stadium.

A Brisbane Lions player was overheard on the broadcast describing the hit as a “dog shot” as Newman struck Neale on the chin after a boundary throw-in.

Given how strict the MRO is with hits to the head, SEN’s Sam Edmund says Newman would be feeling nervous as he awaits a decision from Michael Christian.

“He’d (Newman) be nervous I reckon,” Edmund told SEN’s Crunch Time.

“We wait for the findings of this one, that is the question, does he have a case to answer for?

“He got up holding his jaw, it’s a forearm coming up and under the chin, it’s either a fine or one week.

“When you run it through the matrix, it’s clearly careless and it’s clearly high, if it’s medium or seen as such by Michael Christian it’s one week, if it’s low, then obviously it’s a fine.

“I did like the fact that they left the microphones running on the umpires for a bit, there were accusations that it was a “dog shot” and then there were some Carlton players saying that Lachie was “taking the piss”.

Former Lion Luke Hodge says Newman has nothing to worry about, saying at worse it’s a fine.

“Going to your criteria, I’d say it’d be medium contact to the body and low impact to the head,” Hodge said.

“That’s a fine, if you forearm somebody to the head with medium impact, Lachie doesn’t get up and have a shot that quickly.

“I’ve played with Lachie long enough and been around him long enough, if someone does something dirty like that, he’d get up and have a go back.

“He knew it was a bump which slipped up, he got a free kick, had a shot and moved on. Two seconds later he was chatting with Sam Docherty and having a laugh about it.

“The absolute worst thing he should get for this is a fine, there was no intent to hit him in the neck, it slipped up and it’s a fine for being silly.”

Neale played out the rest of the ground, collecting 20 disposals in his side's 26-point win.

The Lions will look to make it six on the trot next week against Essendon at the Gabba whilst the Blues will face the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
