Five Round 8 performances that flew under the radar according to Champion Data

2023-05-10T12:06+10:00

Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne joined SEN’s Sportsday to discuss the five performances from Round 8 which may have been overlooked in the Coaches' votes.

Hoyne used Champion Data’s rating system, which values impact above volume and punishes mistakes, to find under-the-radar performances from players.

See his five performances from players over the weekend below:

Jarrod Berry (Brisbane)

“We’ll start with Jarrod Berry.

“Jarrod Berry didn't get a vote from the coaches (against Carlton), but we had him as the fourth highest rated player on the ground.

“He had 29 disposals, which is the second most of his career.

“But not just the disposals, it was the impact that he had with ball in hand.

“He was playing more of an outside game, he only had the six contested possessions, but his ball use on Friday night was superb.”

Christian Petracca (Melbourne)

“Petracca’s game was an interesting one (against Gold Coast) because it was a fascinating battle watching him and (Matt) Rowell, especially in that first 45 minutes of the game, it was fantastic.

“He didn't get a vote, but we had him as the fourth highest rated player on the ground.

“It was a powerful performance and that's why the ratings sort of rewarded him so highly, he had high metres gained, his contest game was strong, he had eight clearances.

“He kicked a good goal and had four score assists as well.

“So, a lot of the stuff that he did went a little bit unnoticed.”

Jack Buckley (GWS)

“I just wanted to talk about Jack Buckley's game (against the Western Bulldogs) in terms of what he did against Aaron Naughton.

“That was the eighth best game that we’ve seen by any key defender this year and the highest rated game of his year.

“To put it into context, what he did against one of the more powerful key forwards in the competition, he had 12 spoils and nine intercept possession.

“He defused the situation 21 times behind the ball on the weekend, which is an elite performance in terms of what he did.

“He was the fourth highest rated player on the ground. But missed out on getting a coaches’ vote.”

Jordan De Goey (Collingwood)

“We've had Jordan De Goey in here a couple of times this year in terms of who did they miss.

“He didn't get a vote on the weekend (against Sydney) from the coaches, but we had him as the second highest rated player on the ground and Collingwood's highest rated player as well.

“It's more how often he actually wins the ball and then it turns into scores.

“On the weekend, he only had 17 disposals, but nine of them resulted in scores.

“If you're a midfielder, around about 30% of your disposals turn into scores.

“So that (nine out of 17) that's at a ridiculous rate.

“He's sometimes going around about 45 to 50 per cent of his disposals turning into score.

“It's that impact that he's having on matches which is significant.

“I talked about him last week again in terms of (his performances) in tight games, big games. His performance was superb.”

Todd Goldstein (North Melbourne)

“The only real part of this game (between St Kilda and North Melbourne) that really interested me was the battle between Goldstein and (Rowan) Marshall.

“I thought it was a fantastic battle.

“We had Goldstein as the highest rated player on the ground, but he didn't he didn't get a vote.

“That was his best performance of the year.

“We also had Marshall as the third highest rated player on the ground and he also didn't get a vote as well.”
