Carlton powerbrokers or troublemakers? Whateley & Maclure respond to Mathieson's Blues comments

2023-05-13T14:10+10:00

Gerard Whateley and Mark Maclure have responded to the comments made by Carlton “powerbroker” Bruce Mathieson.

Speaking to the Herald Sun on Friday, Mathieson took aim at the Carlton Football Club, be it coach Michael Voss, CEO Brian Cook or Head of Football Brad Lloyd.

Mathieson didn't miss many.

To be fair, the Blues have been the talk of the football world this world, due to poor performances both on the field and off it.

Having lost three of their last four games, the Blues are hanging onto eigth spot for dear life, making Saturday night’s game against the Western Bulldogs so important.

Cook and young midfielder Adam Cerra spoke to the media before and after last week's loss and shared a similar sentiment that if the club wasn’t to play finals this year it wouldn’t be considered a failed season.

Those comments have led to Mathieson’s outburst, labelling members of the board as “weak” and “pathetic”.

“He (Voss) is going to be slaughtered because the Carlton board is so weak,” Mathieson said.

“I’m not trying to chop Vossy in half. I just think we are run pathetically. It’s a real shame.

“Luke Sayers is the president – he’s the boss and should take full responsibility for all of it. He’s the bloke who is supposed to bring home the bacon.

“Even Cooky, I thought he might be OK. But when you sit down and look at it, he was controlled by Frank Costa under his regime at Geelong.

“You see, there’s a million No. 2s and No. 3s in this world – but there are very, very few No. 1s who can make a decision and carry it out and get it done.

“And Cooky was lucky – he had Frank Costa as his boss, who guided him on every decision he ever made. He’s made no decisions at Carlton.

“I woudn’t have left (football boss Brad) Lloyd there for a start.

“I mean look at the difference in Collingwood since they went out and got a coach (Craig McRae). There’s been an incredible change since the old Collingwood establishment was chopped up. And that’s what we’ve got to have.

“I just don’t think there is a future under this management.”

Whateley took umbrage to Mathieson’s comments, especially those directed at Cook, a person who has done so much good in this game.

“If you boil Mathieson’s comments down, and I don’t know if he is a powerbroker still or not, (but) those are the words of a talkback caller,” Whateley told SEN’s Crunchtime.

“The sheer disrespect to Brian Cook and all that he’s done in footy, that’s the stuff that you just throw away, it’s easy to say and it doesn’t stand up to any scrutiny whatsoever.

“Just a dreadful comment and no footy credibility in that comment at all, but held up as having footy cred.”

Maclure, who played 243 for the Blues, believes if Mathieson is so passionate about his former club, he should put his hand up and run for presidency.

“They can stand up and put themselves up for president if they want to, but does anyone want to do that?,” Maclure said.

“Has he done so? Will he do so? Why don’t you put your hand up and have a go, that’s what I say.

“If you don’t like what’s going on, have a go and see what you can do.

“We’re still in the top eight, I think they’ve forgotten about that.”

Carlton will host the Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night, a clash which David King believes is a must-win for the Blues.
