Could Melbourne midfielder be on Essendon's radar?

Could Melbourne midfielder James Harmes be on the move?

The 27-year-old has only played two full games for the Demons in 2023, with 7AFL journalist Mitch Cleary reporting that he met with Essendon last year.

Harmes is contracted until the end of 2024, but with opportunities coming less regularly coupled with strong VFL form, Cleary believes he is a player to watch in the trade period.

“He is a fascinating name. End of last year he was in and out of Melbourne’s team. He was the sub in two of the last four games,” Cleary told the Tradies Podcast.

“He’s on a five-year deal that expires at the end of 2024. I think he’s a chance to move before his contract is up.

“Last year he had a look around because he was in and out of the Melbourne team.

“He had a conversation with Essendon head of footy Josh Mahoney who was formerly the head of footy at Melbourne who would’ve been there when they signed that initial five-year deal and he still right now can’t get a game.

“Things have changed since he signed that five-year contract, which I don’t believe was on massive money because it gave him security, but it gave Melbourne a cheaper option.

“Go back to the Essendon one. If Darcy Parish was to leave, could there be a spot for Harmes in that Essendon midfield or to play on a flank? Given the connection with Mahoney.

“Don’t forget Melbourne has got their own pick and Freo’s pick from Luke Jackson. If Harmes is not getting a game now, how’s he going to go in the final year of his contract with two first-round picks?”

Harmes has played 147 career games for the Dees, including the 2021 premiership.
