Giants win and De Koning stars despite Blues going down in Sunday VFL action

2023-05-21T15:41+10:00

Round 9 of the VFL season is complete with two games taking place across Sunday afternoon.

The first game took place at Williamstown with the Seagulls defeating Carlton 80-60.

While Alex Cincotta was the man to sit out as Carlton’s carryover emergency for their AFL clash against Collingwood, the Blues were still stacked with senior-listed players as the likes of Tom De Koning, Paddy Dow, Lachie Fogarty, Brodie Kemp, Lachie Plowman, Lachie Cowan and Zac Fisher took centre stage.

In defeat, the best-performed Blue was probably exciting tall De Koning who had 23 disposals and eight marks to go with his 34 hitouts as he looks to return to the AFL side.

Dow was typically prolific with 40 disposals while pick No. 32 from the 2022 draft Jaxon Binns showed plenty with 30 touches of his own.

For the winners, former Demon Marty Hore was dominant down back with 27 disposals and 15 marks as he continues to press his claims for a mid-season draft opportunity.

While windy conditions suited Williamstown as they picked up their sixth win from eight games, the Blues would have been disappointed to go down given the number of AFL-listed players in the side.

The second and final game of the round took place in Western Sydney with GWS hosting St Kilda-affiliate Sandringham in a curtain-raiser to Sunday afternoon’s AFL clash.

With GWS winning 87-60, Josh Fahey was best afield with disposals and marks in a dominant display.

He was well supported by ruckman Matt Flynn who responded to his AFL axing with two goals, 21 disposals and 32 hitouts.

For Sandringham, Tom Highmore was everywhere down back with 28 disposals while Jack Bytel continued to press his case for a spot in the senior side with 36 disposals of his own.

Midfield pair Marcus Windhager (21 disposals) and Jack Billings (23 disposals) were slightly quieter than usual as they also hope to break into the AFL side.

Brisbane sits atop the VFL ladder through nine rounds with eight wins from their eight games played.
