Analysing the trade value of West Coast's veterans

2023-05-26T09:39+10:00

David King and Kane Cornes have gone through West Coast’s veteran players and what they would be worth in a trade if the Eagles wanted to move veterans for draft picks.

West Coast is about to enter a steep rebuild and will need all the draft capital they can get their hands on.

Ultimately, the pair decided the majority of the older Eagles have minimal value.

See their thoughts below:

Nic Naitanui

King: “He’s 33, he’s only played eight games in a couple of years, is he any value to another club?”

Cornes: “Not for a pick inside the fourth round.”

King: “So you’re keeping him then.”

Cornes: “You either keep him or you force him into retirement. You make a hard call on a couple of these players who have stuck around too long.”

Jeremy McGovern

Cornes: “Yeah, you’d get a Jack Gunston style deal for McGovern. Late 2nd rounder.”

King: “Would you take that if you were the Eagles? Would that be a prudent business decision?”

Cornes: “Yep. He doesn’t play. Hard calls. These are the calls they should’ve made three years ago.”

King: “McGovern is the one for me. I think you can get something for McGovern. I think you can get a 2nd rounder. He’s a game changer for a club like Carlton or Sydney.”

Elliot Yeo

King: “Would you tip Elliot Yeo out at 29?”

Cornes: “If I could get something for him. I don’t think you’d get much for him. He just doesn’t play.”

Andrew Gaff

Cornes: “You’re not going to get anything significant for him. I think he’s a big elephant in the room at the moment with his form. He’s not the player he thought he was.”

Tom Barrass

Cornes: “Yep. You’d get a first round pick for Barrass. I’d move him if I could.”

Oscar Allen

Cornes: “No, I’m keeping Oscar Allen.”

King: “He’s the only one of currency, isn’t he?”

Cornes: “That’s why it’s a bit concerning.”

Jack Darling

King: “I don’t think you get much. Just a bit past his best.”

The point of the exercise

King: “This is the counterargument. If you’re going to get nothing for these guys, why not allow them to continue playing on minimum chips and if you need them, you need them.”
