The 4 certainties for Sydney versus Carlton

2023-05-26T13:10+10:00

Back for another week, the SEN.com.au team gives you an insight into how every game will play out across the weekend.

Labelling something a ‘certainty’ in any sport is fraught with danger.

But we’ll attempt to find some anyway.

Here is what we consider certainties for the Round 11 opener between Sydney versus Carlton.

Errol Gulden to have 25 or more disposals

Sydney’s Errol Gulden has been in prolific form across the last month with disposal tallies of 27, 37, 39 and 24 across his last four games.

Up against a Carlton side that occasionally lets outside runners collect plenty of footy (see Josh Daicos last week), Gulden could be in for a big one.

Even looking back to his game against the Blues in the pre-season at Blacktown, Gulden amassed a ginormous three goals and 45 disposals.

While we don’t expect him to have that kind of night, 25 touches should be light work for the 20-year-old.

Hayden McLean to kick a goal

Sydney tall Hayden McLean has goaled in all four of his last games and he’ll hope to extend that streak to five against the Blues.

With Lewis Young out of the side and Jacob Weitering likely to take Lance Franklin, McLean could benefit from playing on a defender he should have a considerable height advantage against.

Don’t expect him to dominate, but the 24-year-old should kick one major at the SCG on Friday night.

Cerra 25+ disposals

Outside of one aberration against the Western Bulldogs in Round 9, Adam Cerra has cleared 30 disposals every week since Round 6.

He has been deployed back on-ball for the Blues and been given free rein to cover the ground and find a ton of the footy.

It’s hard to imagine things being any different on Friday night.

Charlie Curnow 2+ goals

Against an undermanned and undersized Sydney backline, Charlie Curnow should be set to feast.

He has failed to kick multiple goals in a game once this season and previously tore North Melbourne to shreds when their backline was without a legitimate key defender.

Whether it’s Lewis Melican or Robbie Fox, Curnow will be unstoppable on Friday night.
