Carlton board member departs as focus intensifies on Blues

UPDATE

Carlton has released a statement regarding the departure of Craig Mathieson.

Read the statement below:

The Carlton Football Club has accepted the resignation of Director Craig Mathieson, who has served on the Carlton Board since 2012.

Mathieson made the decision to resign after serving as a Director for 11 years and overseeing the Club’s finance and audit remits.

Carlton President Luke Sayers thanked Mathieson for his time at the Club.

“We accept Craig’s decision to resign from his role as a Club director and thank him for all he has contributed to the Blues across 11 years of service.”

Mathieson’s position as a Director would have become vacant at the end of 2024 due to him reaching his maximum term under the constitution, and the Club will now take counsel from its Independent Nominations Committee to commence a thorough process for a Director replacement, based on the needs analysis of Board requirements and relevant skill sets.

EARLIER

Carlton board member Craig Mathieson is expected to tender his resignation this week.

Mathieson has been a director since 2012 and was one of several board members who supported president Luke Sayers' push for Ross Lyon to succeed David Teague as senior coach in 2021.

He is the nephew of Bruce Mathieson, who was highly critical of the club in a recent interview with The Herald Sun.

Mathieson's departure, which could come as early as Monday, will open a spot on the board as the focus intensifies on the Blues, who have lost six of their last seven games.

His resignation comes just over a year before he would have stepped aside anyway, as per Carlton's constitution which limits the terms of directors to 12 years or four consecutive three-year stints.

While head coach Michael Voss, who is contracted until the end of 2024, is safe for now, there is widespread discontent among supporters over the club's current plight.

Carlton has not played finals since 2013 and embarked on a full-scale rebuild in 2015.

Since then, they've sacked Brendon Bolton and Teague, and last year missed finals on percentage.

As per the club's constitution, Sayers is expected to step down as president and off the board at the end of next year.
