AFL makes no findings against Clarkson, Fagan & Burt with independent panel dissolved

2023-05-30T20:07+10:00

The AFL has made no findings against Alastair Clarkson, Chris Fagan and Jason Burt after reaching an agreement involved with the families involved in the historical racism allegations at Hawthorn.

It follows The Age eporting that a deal was reached on Tuesday and the independent investigation would be wound up.

Clarkson, Fagan and Burt have been at the forefront of allegations since the release of a bombshell ABC report last September detailing horrifying mistreatment of First Nations players and their families.

The trio have always maintained their innocence.

An AFL statement confirms that no findings have been made against the Hawthorn trio, with the complainants agreeing the allegations should not be investigated further by the independent panel, which has now been wound up.

The AFL still maintains the independent panel was the right course of action and still has the ability to charge Hawthorn for its role in the saga.

The league's statement says complainants won't make any claims against in the AFL in any processes including court. But while the AFL is out of the woods, the complainants and accused can still pursue their legal rights.

The panel will also not issue on a report of its investigation so far.

Fronting the media on Thursday night, AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said there was no financial claim to the agreement that he described as an "imperfect resolution."

He also acknowledged the pain of all parties involved and made a commitment to improve the resources towards cultural safety for First Nations players and their families in the AFL and AFLW.

Alastair Clarkson has been on leave for almost a fortnight after stepping away from North Melbourne as the weight of the investigation grew.

It's unclear if he's now in a headspace to return following the AFL's ruling.
