Sheed calls for De Goey to get “month or two” ban for Hewett bump

Collingwood midfielder Jordan De Goey is set for a stint on the sidelines for a high bump that concussed Elijah Hewett in Saturday’s win over West Coast in Perth.

De Goey’s bump came late in the first quarter of the 120-57 win with his shoulder collecting the 18-year-old in the head.

While he’s likely to receive a lengthy ban from the Match Review Officer when his findings are released on Sunday, the Eagles failed to respond on field to the hit as Hewett’s teammates didn’t remonstrate with the Magpie following the incident.

Senior midfielder Dom Sheed admitted that he and his teammates should have done more to fly the flag for the teenager.

“I actually didn’t see it (the hit at the time),” Sheed told 6PR Football.

“I kept looking at the big screen and kept missing it. But I heard it was pretty bad. The boys probably didn’t respond the way we should’ve when that happened.

“But watching it back now, I think he deserves a good month or two on the sidelines.”

Collingwood coach Craig McRae’s thoughts went out to Hewett post-game.

“These split-second decisions that you make, whether you bump or smother, they have to make them out there,” McRae said.

“It’s hard to practice for those.

“I hope the young lad’s okay. That’s where our concern goes to.”

Any suspension would rule De Goey out of Brownlow contention with the midfielder among the betting favourites for the award in the lead-up to the West Coast clash.

Collingwood next play Melbourne on King’s Birthday at the MCG where they’ll almost certainly be without the 27-year-old.
