The Round 13 performances that flew under the radar according to Champion Data

2023-06-14T11:55+10:00

Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne joined SEN’s Sportsday to discuss the five performances from Round 13 which may have been overlooked in the coaches’ votes.

Hoyne used Champion Data’s rating system, which values impact above volume and punishes mistakes, to find under-the-radar performances from players.

See his five performances from players over the weekend below:

James Rowbottom (Sydney)

“James Rowbottom, we had him as the highest rated player on the ground on the weekend (against St Kilda).

“It was actually his highest rated game of his career, 17 contested possessions and nine clearances, both career high numbers.

“But he didn't get a vote from the coaches.”

Connor Rozee (Port Adelaide)

“Connor Rozee’s game on Friday night (against the Bulldogs) was another really good example of maximum damage from not as many disposals as what Connor can get sometimes.

“We had him as the highest rated player on the ground.

“He did get two votes, but there were four or five others that got more votes.

“He actually had 23 disposals, which was the lowest disposal count for him for six weeks, but his ability to be able to slice you through ball use was so important.

“The other thing on his game that really stood out on, on Friday night was his pressure.

“That was the second-best pressure match that he's actually had this year for himself as well.

“It was a really rounded performance there for Connor.”

Lloyd Meek (Hawthorn)

“Lloyd Meek against Brisbane on the weekend was the highest rated ruckman for the round just gone.

“We had him as the highest-rated player on the ground, but he didn't get a vote from the coaches.

“His ruck work was the fourth-best of any of any ruckman in the competition this weekend.

“His defensive actions were actually the sixth-best of any ruckman in the competition as well.

“His ability to be able to win contest and win clearance was the best of any ruckman in the competition.”

Andrew Brayshaw (Fremantle)

“Andrew Brayshaw didn't get a vote on the weekend, but we had him as the third-highest rated player on the ground (against Richmond).

“His first eight or nine weeks are probably systematic of what Freo were actually doing.

“We talked about Fremantle’s ground ball issues and that was an issue on the weekend against Richmond, but it wasn't through a lack of ground ball wins by Brayshaw himself.

“He's got 30 ground ball gets the last three weeks and he had 30 ground ball gets in the previous seven weeks.”

Daniel Lloyd (GWS)

“He was the highest-rated player on the ground on the weekend (against North Melbourne).

“He played a slightly different role for GWS, he had 21 disposals, but his ability to be able to win contests and actually get up the ground and play more midfield minutes was something we don't usually see from Daniel.

“He had 13 contested possessions, a career high there for him.

“He didn’t get a vote and probably went under the radar from the coaches.”
