AFL clubs rebuilding is “an excuse for failure”, says Port's David Koch

2023-06-16T09:00+10:00

While David Koch is running the show at Port Adelaide, the club will never undergo a rebuild.

The Power chairman has strongly stated that going to the bottom of the ladder to hunt draft picks is “an excuse for failure”.

The likes of Hawthorn, Adelaide and Carlton have undergone deep rebuilds in the last decade.

“Good clubs don’t talk about rebuilds. Like, Geelong doesn’t talk about rebuilds. The Swans have never talked about rebuilds,” Koch told SEN Breakfast.

“I think rebuilds are an excuse for failure.

“People are asking for a free pass and saying ‘we’re not going to make finals because we’re rebuilding’, well if you’re not in the game to at least aim for finals – it’s a common theme from Ken Hinkley saying we start the year wanting to make finals and then win enough games to compete in September.

“That has always been our view.”

Of course, Koch says his comments were not aimed at any rival club.

“No, it’s not a shot at anyone,” he added.

“I’m a big believer in culture and football clubs and football departments and organisations are really fragile because of the scrutiny they’re under and you’ve got to have a strong mindset and a strong culture.

“As I said in 2018, we really targeted culture with the playing group and our success today has been based on that decision at the end of 2018.”

After missing the eight in 2022, Port Adelaide has rebounded fiercely, winning 11 in a row and sitting inside the top four.
